Mothers Day is an extra special occasion which is celebrated world wide  and allows children of all ages to show their Mums just how much they love them.  But how did we come to celebrate this date and why?

Through history there are many celebrations of Mothers and Motherhood which date as far back as the Ancient Greek and Roman times.  During these periods of time, people would hold large festivals and parties observing and honnoring mothers whilst  rejoycing their gods Rhea and Cybele.

This however has since turned in to a traditional Christian service which is helded on a global scale.  Although there are different histories surrounding the tradition, one thing remains true – the reason why we acknowledge Mothers and all that they do for us.  Below we continue to look at the history of the tradition and why we find it important to celebrate mothers, grandmothers and motherhood in general.

The ‘birth’ of mothers day spans back to 1908 when a young lady called Anne Jarvis decided to hold a memorial for her mother at a Methodist Church in West Viginia, USA.  This celebration of her mother and her mothers life has gone down in history as the first event to mark a ‘Mothers Day’ celebration.

The poignancy of this memorial service was noticed by significant government officials who later in 1914 decided to make the date official.  During this period of time Woodrow Wilson signed a declaration that every year, the second Sunday of the month of May would be the celebrated ‘Mother’s Day’ holiday.   This holiday would be marked and recognised around the world.  It would also be known as a annual holiday to honor mothers.

In the UK however, this celebratory holiday has a different history.  Marked on the 4th Sunday of Lent (although not having any connection to Lent), Mothers Day was celebrated as a national holiday where children (often daughters) would be given time off from work to visit their mothers.   Often working as domestic staff, House-hold managers agreed to allow one day for staff to return home to see their mothers and grandmothers.  This became known as Mothering Sunday.

Mothers day is a fabulous and loving time of the year that allows us to spend time with our mothers.  To show them exactly how we feel and how much they mean to us.  Mothers day can be celebrated at home or in church, which ever suits your own (and your mothers) way of life.
